Aphex Twin (aka Polygon Window) - Surfing on Sine Waves [+ Quoth EP] [ 1993 ]

Call it ironic that the Aphex Twin's first U.S. album release was under a pseudonym, but given the many names Mr. James has used over the course of his career, perhaps it's just as well. Regardless of name or intent, on Surfing on Sine Waves he serves up a great collection of abstract electronic/dance madness, caught somewhere between the driftiness of his more ambient works at the time and the rave-minded nuttiness of "Digeridoo." The opening track, "Polygon Window," plants its feet firmly in both camps, with a brisk series of beats playing against the slightly dark, slightly quirky keyboard sounds with which the Twin first made his name. It's a good harbinger for the rest of Surfing on Sine Waves, which satisfies, if not always astonishes, like Aphex does at his best. "Quoth," the single from the album, is a great dancefloor pounder; though not as exultant and slowly building as "Digeridoo," it does makes its point with bluntness and power, consisting nearly solely of drums and percussion samples. "Quino Phec" is the album-ending counterpart; it's a mostly calm composition with only slight drums low in a mix that floats along inoffensively enough. The trademark wiggy humor of the Twin crops up at points as well, with the distorted video game robot voice on "UT1 - Dot" intoning something about "electronic techno music" being one of the more noticeable examples. Surfing on Sine Waves is more a diversion in the end than anything else, not quite Aphex-by-numbers but not one of his great leaps forward either. Newcomers would do better with the Classics and Selected Ambient Works 85-92 compilations first, when it comes to recordings from this time period.

Country: UK
Released: 1993
Genre: Electronic
Style: Techno, Experimental, Industrial
Notes:
100 copies were released in a Wilton LP size cardboard mailer, with a photocopied label on the front stating the following -
"REPHLEX DISCO ASSAULT KIT (CAT 09-II)

And on the rear flap -
"CAUTION

any brain damage, hearing loss
or haemorrhaging resulting from
reception of the recordings within."
This issue contained a blue t-shirt with a yellow Rephlex logo, some 'Magic Gum' candy, and the first issue of J9ii (distinguished from the later issue by the text side of the label simply stating 'the Caustic Window' in orange lettering, as opposed to the later issues more detailed yellow/green text)
..................................................
A further 900 copies of the exact same record were also released in Wilton LP size mailers, only this time without any t-shirts, and with some substituting the 'Magic Gum' candy for 'Fizz Wizz popping candy. These also have a different front label on the mailer, this time stating -
"REPHLEX
The Caustic Window - Joyrex J9 EP (CAT 009 ii)
p+c 1993 RePhleX (P.O. BOX 2676, LONDON N11 1AZ)"
The label on the rear flap is the same as before.
.........................
Finally, the most common copies were released in plain back 12" sleeves without any of these extras, the only diffence from the others records is the yellow/green label text (as mentioned before, and probably changed to accomodate the information previously on the mailer labels). Printed circularly around this issues labels edge is the following:

Label: Rephlex
Catalog#: CAT 002 EP
Format: 2x12"
Country: UK
Released: 1992
Genre: Electronic
Notes:
The UK test-pressing only double-12" EP for "Q-Chastic" comes in a generic die-cut sleeve, and is limited to 100 copies. The records themselves, although pressed as a double-12", are actually meant to be cut [because of their groove placement] as two 10" records. Originally scheduled to have been issued as a double-7", this aborted EP will never be made available for commercial release.
The UK test-pressing only double-12" ep. for "Q-Chastic" does not feature a tracklisting anywhere either on its packaging, or on the records' labels. The corrections are as appear above.
The version of the untitled song, "---------- [q-chastic - #__]" is different than that of "CAT 002" by Q-CHASTIC, which appears on the UK cd for "The Philosophy Of Sound And Machine" (A.R.T. 2CD).

Aphex Twin (aka GAK)

In 1975 there was an experimental project between Robert Fripp and Brian Eno titled Healthy Colours, where they set their basic rhythm box in motion and noodled around it half-heartedly for 24 minutes, broken up in four plodding and beeping parts. Such was the case 20 years later, when Warp Records found a home for this similarly bland and lesser-known release from modern-day electronic mastermind Richard D. James (aka, Aphex Twin and a half-dozen other aliases). This is a four-song EP that has a basic, clean, and unprovoking sound that must have been dug up from his vast archives of unreleased material. GAK is surprisingly uninspired considering who it's by: a trend-setter, a rule-breaker, and a pioneer. All of these tracks seem interchangeable: four/four beat, identical bpms, generic bass lines, simple keyboard riffs, dry production, and the occasional vocal sample as a garnish. It's like trying to make up as many words as one can with the first four letters in the alphabet — eventually one will figure out there's not much to work with. Admittedly, anyone who's as prolific as James can fall a little from grace. There's such little similarity between the pieces that in all likelihood it's as if he took a couple song sketches to try out some new equipment and decided to release an EP, albeit anonymously. Warp has engaged in this sort of secrecy before, with uncredited one-offs from novelty titles like "Rubber Johnny" and "Woodenspoon." Word gets around, however, when obscure Aphex Twin material surfaces, and the rabid fan will find (and tolerate) a wide variety of it. It's known among his followers how young James was when he first started recording, so perhaps GAK was the result of a gentle high-school daydreamer without much ever coming to mind. Most collectors will reluctantly admit — this is a release to own, rather than listen to.

"How we view ourselves can often determine the perspective and degree in which we see others and the world around us. Each and every one of us has a view. Such a view, that it can shape the future of others and how they live, dream and look towards the future that we all hope is better and more fruitful than our past. This I believe is a common initiative." (Jeff Mills)
